Why working with real competencies?

In Denmark, many people work with real competencies, and it is an area with numerous stakeholders: Politicians, ministries, municipalities, educational institutions, employers, teachers, participants and job applicants… not to mention the schools and organisations that comprise liberal adult education in Denmark.

Each group has its own set of views and interests that may not always overlap; sometimes they even conflict. In the following, we shall attempt to outline the various reasons for liberal adult education to work with real competencies:

Rød pilBecause clarification of real competencies may help participants and members of organisations and associations.
- Get new jobs,
- Get enrolled in formal education,
- Win recognition at work, useful both for negotiating salaries and for promotions,
- Improve their individual insight and confidence, and
- Contribute more/better to the organisations.

Rød pilBecause clarification of real competencies may improve the work by the schools and organisations engaged in liberal adult education.
- To document the value of their work to the world at large and to increase the recognition of informal competencies, and
- To ensure continued public funding from decision-makers (i.e. the municipality, the government or the EU), who all increasingly require documentation for results.

Rød pilBecause clarification may capture and document the competencies of immigrants and other marginalised people, thereby paving the way for better integration in society in general.

Rød pilBecause clarification may improve businesses’ ability to compete in a global marketplace.

Rød pilBecause clarification may propel social development.
- by contributing to an improved overall level of competence and by facilitating a sufficiently large and adequately trained workforce
- by focusing the learning on relevant issues, thus improving the gain from learning processes and better resource management in the educational system
- by making it easier to match applicants and jobs
- by improving Denmark’s ability to compete globally because a high level of competence is key for businesses’ ability to compete.
